An important new feature of the last edition of the Esterházy Art Award was that for the first time in over two months, visitors to the exhibition could vote for their favourite artist, who, in addition to the public prize, will be invited to join the winners of the Award on 14 April at the White Hall of the Esterházy Castle in Kismarton, on the occasion of the Körséta. A large number of visitors took the opportunity to vote, and after counting more than four thousand votes, it was decided that the winner of the "Have your say! The last shortlisted artists of the Esterházy Art Award were selected as the winners of the Audience Award, which will be on show at the Ludwig Museum until 3 March.

The AICA awards have been relaunched and I was asked by the association to create the awards. In this context, I took my time to wonder what professional recognition means in the artworld, what an award means to the someone who receives it, to the entity who gives it and to the ones that do not receive it.
The performative objects that I have made for the recipients of the awards multiply the recognition with their positive messages, and provide a sense of ongoing affirmation. You just need to look in the mirror and say the magic word to yourself.

There are three categories for the
recognition:
"Best Critic",
"Best solo exhibition" and
"Best curatorial project".
The prizes will be awarded by a jury selected at random from the members of the organisation (Dóra Hegyi, Fanni Magyar, Erzsébet Tatai, Katalin Tímár, Barnabás Zemlényi-Kovács).
"The independent jury of the Esterházy Art Award has nominated 18 artists for the prize. For the eighth edition of the competition, 262 artists applied. Entries were open to paintings and site-specific installations (or plans) in the field of painting.
From the entries submitted, 18 candidates were selected by an independent international jury of experts – Dr Julia Fabényi, Dr Ulrike Groos, Barbara Horvath, Dr István Ottrubay, Gábor Rieder, Zsuzsanna Szegedy-Maszák and Vitus Weh – and were shortlisted for the second round of the prize. The shortlisted entries will be presented in an exhibition at the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art from 15 December 2023."

" Endre Tót and the Museum of Fine Arts - Central European Art History Research Institute (KEMKI) have established a prize for contemporary artists in 2021. The TÓTalJOY Prize, with a total prize of €10 000, is open to artists with research-based art projects. This year's winner is Rita Süveges, who will give a short presentation of her project plan for the TÓTalJOY Prize, entitled "Shout to the cloud!", on 24 May, after the award ceremony.
The founder of the award, Endre Tót, a visual artist who has lived in Germany since the late 1970s, has long been planning to create a support scheme for the contemporary Hungarian visual arts scene. KEMKI, which has been in good contact with the artist for many years, was delighted to receive the idea of the award and will provide professional support for the realisation of the project.
The name of the prize derives from Endre Tót's conceptual programme, based on the concept of joy, which he launched in the 1970s. His early Joy pieces and the actions of the TÓTalJOY series are among the most important works of conceptual art in Eastern Europe.
For the second edition of the TÓTalJOY competition, launched in January this year, 38 artists submitted project proposals based on artistic research, in line with the call for proposals and the objectives of the prize. The applications were judged by a nine-member jury of national and international experts, including Zdenka Badovinac (Director, Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU), Zagreb), René Block (curator, gallerist, Berlin), Dávid Fehér (Director, SZM - KEMKI), Tamás Kaszás (artist, 2021. Emese Kürti (Researcher, SZM - KEMKI), Nóra Lukács (Curator, Berlin), Michal Novotný (Head of the Modern and Contemporary Collection, National Gallery, Prague), Berenika Partum (Curator, Berlin, daughter of Ewa Partum and Endre Tót) and Zsolt Petrányi (Head of Department, SZM - Hungarian National Gallery, Contemporary Art Department). In the judging process, preference was given to submissions that responded to changing cultural contexts and contemporary dilemmas.
The jury chose Rita Süveges' entry "Shout to the cloud!" as the winner of the year. Süveges' multifaceted project, which reflects on current issues, is an integral part of her previous work. Using the tools of research-based art, she approaches discourses on our environment that are dominated by geo-management and profit-driven thinking. Her art project explores the cultural, historical, technological and ethical aspects of the ecological crisis through a feminist perspective on the local and regional aspects of the complex phenomenon of ice-damage mitigation.
The TÓTalJOY award ceremony will take place on 24 May at 18:00 with Endre Tót in person. At the award ceremony, Rita Süveges will give a short presentation of her winning project plan, which she will implement over the next year.

Az apokaliptikus asszociációkat is felélesztő vörös meddőhányó buckáit lassan visszahódítja az élővilág. A táj intenzitása azonban különös kalandokra invitál: illegális motocross- és koronglövő pályaként a műszaki sportok hódolói számára újrabrandelt, esztétikus díszletként szolgál. A Kietlen lankák felmutatja, hogy hogyan menti át a technológia magát a jövőbe a természet legyűrésén keresztül, a ráerőszakolt új funkciók által.

Climate Imaginaries and Black Blobs: A Conversation with Rita Süveges

The thorniest questions of industrial agriculture, techno-optimism, and the fossil energy infrastructure are distilled into the compositions of Budapest-based artist Rita Süveges. Trained as a painter, Süveges is also co-founder of the interdisciplinary artist group xtro realm, whose mission is to bring ecological thinking to Hungarian audiences through interactive programs. In this interview, curator Veronika Molnár asks Süveges about her ecocritical art practice and recent residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York, as well as about the pervasive role of the current right-wing political regime in Hungary’s contemporary art scene.

"At the AIR Q21/MuseumsQuartier Wien residency I am going to research the aesthetic representation of ecomodernism and techno-optimism along the adventurous history of the symbolism of the storm. From its cultural representations e.g. in Rubens’s Landscape with a Thunderstorm at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, through the early innovation of the hail cannon as a pioneering piece of geoenginering up to its contemporary version, the anti-hail defense systems that are implemented also in Lower-Austria."
The Artist-in-Residence Programme at Q21/MuseumsQuartier in Vienna is part of ERSTE Foundation’s long-termed endeavor to support contemporary art and to strengthen the situation of its creators, especially in the region of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The residence program is realized together by tranzit, Igor Zabel Association and Kontakt Collection. Kontakt Collection will collaborate with the Zagreb based WHW Akademija.
The 26 nominees were selected by a jury of experts from a pool of 282 applicants. The exhibition entitled Esterházy Art Award – Young Scene Hungary – Short List 2021 will be on view from the 1st December 2021 to the 13rd February 2022 at the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest.

Miközben a szalamandrák kihalásával fenyegető, globálisan terjedő gombás betegség a téma, a terem hátsó részében egy kórusmű szól, amit a tihanyi beépítések és a visszhang elhalkulása ihletett.

“Műalkotásain jelentősen redukált színtartományokkal dolgozik: csak a kék vagy a szürke árnyalatait alkalmazza, ami különleges, fosszíliaszerű merevséget kölcsönöz jeleneteinek. A grisaille festési technikát idéző művek itt, akárcsak a középkori és újkori festményeken, érdekes plaszticitással rendelkeznek. Részleteik néhol egészen domborműszerűnek hatnak, ami tovább erősíti az ábrázolt dolgok élettelen, megkövült jellegét. A színeiktől és ezzel együtt vitalitásuktól is megfosztott mezőgazdasági növények mintha csak az Agrokémia nagy méretű festménypárján ábrázolt, ipari feldolgozóüzemből áradó füsttől kapták volna holt színüket, amely vastag, lemoshatatlan permetrétegként rakódik a terményekre.“

Can we grasp the planetary ecological crisis through local issues? What kind of knowledge can an ecological network researcher, an environmental psychologist and an artist formulate together, which can help us understand our present and our possible future? These are the types of questions posed by the Agency for Climate Imaginary! (ACLIM!), founded by the xtro realm artist group. The Agency houses research-based artistic projects and transdisciplinary theoretical inquiries dealing with the most burning ecological questions.
In the shadow of the climate crisis, the search for subversive local perspectives and alternative visions of the future is increasingly urgent. The question is not only whether we survive, but within what social framework we do so. The economic and political interests responsible for the exploitation of the ecosystem are not only responsible for the destruction of our habitat, but also impose a dominant constraint on the social imaginary that could lead us out of this dead end. The agents of ACLIM! proclaim that we must leave our fixed patterns of thought behind to liberate our imaginary. However, this also requires a new idea of knowledge, which, in addition to science, includes intuition, emotional intelligence, the totality of bodily experiences, artistic knowledge, or dialogue itself. The stake is the survival of our home.

The article is complemented with the reproductions of the paintings of Rita Süveges. In her works, she inquires the possibilities of the representation of the capitalocene and the nature transformed by capital and labor. She is a member of xtro realm, an artist group, which is dealing with new-realist and ecological theories that critique the anthropocentricism of contemporary thinking, in order to provide access to the discourses of climate change and the Anthropocene.
"Napjainkban bolygónk lakható területének több mint a felén mezőgazdasági termelés folyik, és a termőföldek felét mindössze négy fajta növény (búza, kukorica, rizs, szója) takarja. Süveges Rita szerint ebben a monokultúrában a világ szétvált kívánatos kultúrfajokra és kiirtandó természetre. A mellette minden puszta gyom című tárlatával azt próbálja megfejteni, hogy ez a fenntarthatatlan mezőgazdasági gyakorlat hogyan fonódik össze kényszerűen a fosszilis kapitalizmus érdekeivel és annak technológiájával."
“Süveges Rita az egyik olyan művész, aki az Xtro Realm közösség tagjaként tudatosan használja az új ökológia nyelvét és kultúráját, (6) amikor is energiaültetvények növényeinek (kukorica, szója, repce) virtuális modelljeit festi meg és állítja párhuzamba az új bio-ipar csillogó frázisaival (fossil fuel, big oil).
A Kék forradalom című sorozata tulajdonképpen ironikusan reflektál a genetikai tervezés hajnalának zöld forradalmára, hiszen az 1960-as évek optimizmusát és színes fotografikus valóságát cseréli le a kékes fényben fürdő képernyőkultúrára és a számítógépek által vezérelt mezőgazdaság világára, ahol a hangzatos jelszavak ellenére az agresszív monokultúrák az ökológiai katasztrófa felé sodorják a bioszférát.“
" művészkörökben évtizedek óta csak Derkó néven emlegetett Képzőművészeti ösztöndíjasok pályázati kiállítása 2021. március 3-án nyílt meg. A Műcsarnokban idén is huszonhat pályakezdő művész mutathatja be alkotását – bár ennek a korlátozások feloldásáig csak online lehetünk szemlélői. A Derkovits Gyula Képzőművészeti ösztöndíjban részesültek nem csupán az állami kitüntetésnek és az anyagi javaknak örülhetnek, hanem annak a „jegynek” is, amely egyfajta belépőt jelenthet a hivatásos művészek világába. A huszonhat kiállító közül Bernáth Dánielt, Gregóczki Rékát, Jagicza Patríciát, Kazi Rolandot, Kenesei Zsófiát, Máriás Istvánt aka Horror Pistát, Süveges Ritát és Varga Ádámot kerestük meg kérdéseinkkel."
A Derkovits Gyula festő-és grafikusművészről elnevezett ösztöndíjat művészkörökben évtizedek óta Derkónak nevezik. A díjra a 35. életévüket be nem töltött művészek pályázhatnak, és legfeljebb három egymást követő évben nyerhetik el. Az ösztöndíj összege havi bruttó 200.000 Ft. A pályázók műveit az Emberi Erőforrások Minisztériuma által felkért független szakmai zsűri bírálja el, amely évente 26 művészt díjazhat, sokszor nehéz döntések és komoly viták során. A több mint 200 jelentkező alkotó közül kell kiválasztani, kiknek a pályája ígéretes, vagy kik azok, akiknek merész próbálkozásai, újító ötletei támogatásra érdemesek. A pályáztatás és pályázatkezelés feladatait a MANK Magyar Alkotóművészeti Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. végzi.
Az 1955-ben alapított ösztöndíj fő küldetése, hogy segítse a fiatal, pályakezdő művészeket, anyagi támogatást nyújtva a megélhetéshez, hogy a művészek az alkotói folyamatokra koncentrálhassanak.
"In her exhibition, Süveges explores how the unsustainable practices of agriculture are intertwined with the technology and interests of fossil capitalism. She closely observes the practices of greenwashing the latest technological innovations, and also the phenomenon of monocultures as habitats. The central question of the exhibition is how the concessions made by the system of production contribute to sustaining a destructive system."

The international Artists-in-Residence program was established in 2007 and is the largest studio program in Central Europe. MeetFactory facilitates ten studios, which annually host over thirty visual artists, curators, musicians, theater directors, and writers. We foster the involvement of our artists in residence not only within the programming of MeetFactory (Open Studios, Public House, Museum Night, etc.) and its three exhibition spaces (exhibitions, performances, guided tours), but also in the context of the Czech and Central European art scene

After the Anthropocene, an age evoked by irresponsible human activities, will follow the Chthulucene, a time characterized by fear and the fact that we are all together in trouble.
Over the past few centuries, the sphere of existential and legal rights has radically broadened. We have developed practices, we have accomplished important results and incredible shortfalls.
In order to survive, we need to take responsibility for the collective and find ways to represent something other than just ourselves. We have to rephrase our mutual understandings, rethink our civic duties and reformulate our definitions of political life. There should be a ‘natural contract’, which, as defined by Michel Serres, is a collective understanding that would, in countering the damages caused by humanity, protect not only humans, but the wider world we want to and have to live in. It is hereby crucial to acknowledge that we, in our current system of political power, are responsible for giving a voice to the other.
To bring this understanding into practice, we call upon an equal representation of other entities, even entities without language, entities without bodies and non-organic entities. We call upon this natural contract to include not only our species but all earthlings, some of which we know and some of which we don’t, along with non-living subjects, ideas and notions we cherish. This is - and we must understand that - about us, about you, and about all the others.
We Solemnly Swear is the fourth chapter of the Klimata series, a one-year performance project by Montag Modus that explores global changes, taking the term “climate” in its broadest sense. Based on Bruno Latour's definition, climate is understood here as “a wide range of relationships between humans and their material living conditions”. The fourth event of Montag Modus Klimata takes civil responsibility as its starting point and invites artists from Budapest and Berlin to share their personal interpretations on the topic.
During the event, the Budapest-based xtro realm artist collective will present parts from their encyclopedia, a freshly published book that is part of a multidisciplinary project gearing towards a post-anthropocentric world. Since 2017, the group has set up various programs (reading circles, exhibitions, field trips) in Budapest dealing with new-realist and ecological theories that critique the anthropocentrism of contemporary thinking and that, in the spirit of knowledge-sharing and transdisciplinarity, provide access to the current discourse on climate change .

A nagyon erőteljes materializmus mellett közös még ezekben a gondolkodási irányokban, hogy hangsúlyos szerepet kap bennük az instabilitás, a törékenység, az összefésülhetetlenség. Nem véletlenül idézi a kötet előszava Gilles Deleuze mondatát, mely szerint „megnyílni az embertelen és az emberfeletti számára, (...) ez a filozófia értelme”.
Hogy ez a filozófia hogyan hasznosítható az ökológiai válság idején, mit lehet ebből meríteni a saját életünkre nézve és hogyan hat a képzőművészeti alkotási folyamatokra, arról az enciklopédiát megalkotó xtro realm csoport három tagjával, Horváth R. Gideonnal, Süveges Ritával és Zilahi Annával beszélgettünk. "
